Why relief & rehabilitation?
Disasters and calamities are among the sources of poverty. Disasters ruin lives, snatch livelihood means and destabilise the whole society.
In an instant, life can change for millions of families. Natural disasters can take homes and what little possessions they have. During humanitarian emergencies, responding immediately and effectively could mean saving many lives. During natural disasters and communal riots, there are critical shortages of food, medicine and shelter. As a result, many civilians, particularly women, children and the elderly, suffer because they are among the most vulnerable members of society.
No Social development Program can overlook disasters. Geographically and socio-politically, many areas in the country are highly prone to both natural and man-made disasters.
North Bihar remains one of the most vulnerable regions of India due to recurrent floods, river erosion, and climate-related disasters. Every year, thousands of families face loss of shelter, livelihoods, livestock, and access to basic services. In this challenging context, Islah Welfare Foundation is committed to providing timely relief and sustainable rehabilitation to disaster-affected communities, with a special focus on women, children, elderly persons, and marginalised households.
Immediate Relief Response
Islah Welfare Foundation undertakes need-based emergency interventions during floods and other calamities. These include the distribution of dry ration kits, safe drinking water, temporary shelter support, clothing, and essential household items. The Foundation also facilitates basic health services, hygiene awareness, and psychosocial support to reduce post-disaster health risks and trauma among affected families.
Rehabilitation and Livelihood Restoration
Recognising that relief alone is not sufficient, Islah Welfare Foundation emphasises long-term rehabilitation. The Foundation supports families in rebuilding their livelihoods through skill development, small livelihood grants, livestock-based income support (such as goat rearing), and women-led micro-enterprises. These initiatives aim to restore income sources and reduce distress migration, particularly among rural women and youth.
Community Resilience and Disaster Preparedness
Islah Welfare Foundation works closely with local communities to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience. This includes awareness programs on disaster risk reduction, climate-adaptive livelihood practices, health and sanitation, and strengthening community-based institutions. The Foundation encourages community participation to ensure that interventions are inclusive, locally relevant, and sustainable.
Bridging Gaps in Access to Entitlements
Many disaster-affected families face difficulties in accessing government welfare schemes due to a lack of documentation or awareness. Islah Welfare Foundation provides handholding support, awareness, and advocacy to help communities access rightful entitlements related to housing, compensation, health, and social security.
Commitment to Dignity and Sustainable Recovery
Through its integrated relief and rehabilitation approach, Islah Welfare Foundation remains committed to restoring dignity, rebuilding livelihoods, and creating resilient communities in North Bihar. The Foundation believes that sustainable recovery is possible only when relief efforts are combined with empowerment, participation, and long-term development planning.
